He graduated from Archbishop Curley High School in 1986, where he won the distinguished “Curley Man of the Year” award. He played four years of varsity lacrosse and football. In 1986 he led his team in winning the MSA championship while also leading the state of Maryland in scoring with 61 goals and 60 assists. He was named “USA Today’s” player of the year and won the honored Ensign C. Markland Kelly award. He attended UMBC on a full athletic scholarship playing attack and midfield for four years. Upon graduation he was selected by the Baltimore Thunder, the professional indoor lacrosse team. Coach Beres and his family are active in the Pasadena community. He has coached many youth teams in the area including CYLA and the Pasadena Panthers Football.
