Sara Gannon.


Varsity Assistant Coach

Biography:

Sara has been the assistant Varsity Coach for 3 seasons at Chesapeake High School this fall. Coach Sara has been involved with Lake Shore Field Hockey as a coach and fundraising & outreach coordinator for eight years. She has remained as a board member of the Lake Shore Athletic Association 7 years and is a former softball coach in the organization. The end of 2019 she became the Lake Shore Field Hockey Commissioner with the goal to bridge the feeder system and Chesapeake High School Field Hockey program as she begins her 9th season. Coach Sara is a former CYLA Girl’s Lacrosse Commissioner, Lacrosse Head Coach, and Panthers Athletic Club Board member. In addition, she is a level 1 & 2 U.S. Field Hockey Certified, Indoor U.S. Field Hockey, Accredited NFHS Coach, U.S. Field Hockey member, National Field Hockey Coaches Association member, and Positive Coaching Alliance certified coach. Coach Sara is also seen in the high school volunteering and is found around the Pasadena community working with constituents to trouble shoot issues. She has an Associate degree in Business Management and just completed her Bachelor’s in Marketing.  She is an alum of Chesapeake High where she played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. Lastly, she has a very supportive team at home with her two children and very patient husband, Dan.

Varsity Head Coach

Biography:

Stacey Mackintosh is a South River alumni where she played field hockey, lacrosse and tennis. While at South River she was named female athlete of the year in 2012.  While playing field hockey she made first team all-county twice for the capital gazette, three-time first team all-county for Anne Arundel County coaches pick, first team all met for the Baltimore Sun and Washington Post, and first team all-state with the MD state field hockey coach’s association. She also played division I field hockey at Radford University and finished her field hockey career at Towson University. She graduated from Towson University with her BS in Exercise Science and graduated from Barry University in 2019 with her MS in Occupational Therapy. She previously was an assistant coach at Mount De Sales Academy where she helped lead the team to a successful winning season while there. This is her fifth year as head coach at Chesapeake High School. This past fall our JV program earned the tile of JV county champions for the 2023 season and we are looking to earn that title again. Our varsity program was able to advance to the region finals and we are looking to continue to grow and progress forward towards the state championship.

Coach Kelly Shanahan became fully involved in coaching field hockey in 2005 when her daughter Erin was in 3rd grade.  Shanahan has coached at all levels from rec league to coaching in an international match against a visiting team from Uruguay.    Shanahan holds her Level 1 USA Field Hockey Coaching Certification and was a Liberty Mutual Responsible Coach of the Year recipient.  Shanahan takes great pride in being a penalty corner expert and has coached teams how to win on the penalty corners.  A coach of a 2013 National Indoor Tournament Championship U16 team and a Silver Medalist at Disney's Showcase Shanahan coaches for The Gaels Field Hockey Club, the #1 ranked Club in Maryland and #12 in the Country.  Shanahan works full time as a Regional Pharmacy Manager and her daughter Erin is a freshman at the University of Virginia.  Coach Shanahan will be assisting in between her job, coaching her rec team, club team and seeing her own daughter play.

Biography:

A 1983 graduate of Chesapeake High School, Joan (Downey) Johnson was Chesapeake High School's first female Blue Chip Athlete earning an athletic scholarship to the University of North Dakota.  Johnson was AA County All County Goalie her Junior and Senior years and All Metro Honorable Mention.  Selected numerous times as the AA County Arundel Sun Goalie of the Week she also Captained the team in her Jr. and Sr. years.  She led her team in 1981 and 1982 to the State Semi-Finals.  Johnson went on to play field hockey at Division !! University of North Dakota and in her Sophomore year - the team finished 6th in the Division II Nationals.  Upon returning to Maryland, she took over the helm of Old Mill High School's field hockey program for 2 season in 1988 and 1989 - helping the school have it's first winning season ever in field hockey and earning the Capital-Gazette 1989 Field Hockey Coach the Year honors.  In a short time off to have 3 children, Courtney, Caitlyn and John, Joan began helping with rec league and continues coaching rec league today.  She is co-founder of The Gaels Field Hockey Club, ranked #1 in the State of Maryland, and #12 in the Country at the U19 age bracket - out of 250 clubs.  A 2008 recipient of the Liberty Mutual's Responsible Coach of the Year Award, Johnson is also a Level II certified coach with USA Field Hockey and coaches the USAFH Futures Program.  Recently Johnson was also invited to coach at the Penn State team field hockey camp. Johnson boasts having 3 Junior Olympians who she coached this year at several club events including Disney's Showcase where the brought home the silver..  Johnson credits her years of success with having a passion for the game and a desire to see young ladies improve on and off the field.  She further credits her success on and off the field to her mentor and high school field hockey coach Jerry Coleius Raab who remains a lifelong friend.  Johnson is married to John Johnson, Sr. and they live in Severna Park with their 3 children.

Joan Johnson.


Varsity Head Coach

Biography:

Joan (Downey) Johnson is in her 2nd year as the Head Varsity Coach.  A Chesapeake Field Hockey Alum herself, Coach Johnson takes great pride in bringing this program back to a Regional Champion status.   Coach Johnson is a Level 2 USA Field Hockey Certified coach and is a member of the Club Advisory Task Force with USA Field Hockey.   Chosen to coach at the Penn State Team Camp in 2013 and 2014 was a great honor.  Coach Johnson also in June of 2014 coached a National Futures U14 Team at the USA Home of Hockey in PA.  Chesapeake's first female Blue Chip athlete, Coach Johnson played Division II field hockey at the University of North Dakota after completing a stellar career at Chesapeake as the All County Goal Keeper for her Junior and Senior years.  Additionally, an honorable mention All-Metro player and Anne Arundel Sun Field Hockey Goalie of the week 6 times, Coach Johnson played girls lacrosse at CHS and often played with the boys team to improve her skills.  Coach Johnson is passionate and enthusiatic about the sport and is very proud to be back at her Alma Mater.  She is married to John Johnson and is the mother of Courtney (CHS '15), Caitlyn (CHS '20) and Johnny (CHS '22).

Associate Head Coach Varsity Field Hockey

Biography:

Coach Teri Lawn joins the field hockey staff at Chesapeake High School bringing with her a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game.   A graduate of Catonsville High School (CHS) Lawn was a standout All County and All Metro player - earning a Division I scholarship to Towson University where she played both field hockey and lacrosse earning All American Honors in field hockey.   Lawn is the mother of Margot, Becca and Jillian and is a Speech Pathologist at Bodkin Elementary.  Lawn is involved at the Rec league program at Lake Shore where her teams have been very successful and highly decorated throught their seasons and tournament games.   Lawn is also a coach with The Gaels Field Hockey Club and will be a valued member to Head Coach Johnson in their quest to bring Chesapeake field hockey back to their glory days!

Michaela Schmidt.


Assistant Varsity Coach

Biography:

Michaela Schmidt is an Elizabeth Seton High School alumni where she played field hockey, lacrosse and softball. She was a 4 year varsity field hockey starter, 3-time honorable mention for the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, 2-time coaches award recipient, and team captain her senior year. Michaela also played division III field hockey at Marywood University where she graduated in 2019 with a BFA in graphic design. While at Marywood, Michaela made first team for the Atlantic East Conference and was team captain her senior year. She was also a 4-time NFHCA National Academic Squad member, Marywood Field Hockey’s Rookie of the Year in 2015, on the All-Academic Honor Roll for the Colonial States Athletic Conference and the Atlantic East Conference, and on the Eastern College Athletic Conference President’s Honor Roll. This is her fourth year as the assistant varsity coach at Chesapeake High School. This past fall our JV program earned the tile of JV county champions for the 2023 season and we are looking to earn that title again. Our varsity program was able to advance to the region finals and we are looking to continue to grow and progress forward towards the state championship.

Sara has been the assistant Varsity Coach for 3 seasons at Chesapeake High School this fall. Coach Sara has been involved with Lake Shore Field Hockey as a coach and fundraising & outreach coordinator for eight years. She has remained as a board member of the Lake Shore Athletic Association 7 years and is a former softball coach in the organization. The end of 2019 she became the Lake Shore Field Hockey Commissioner with the goal to bridge the feeder system and Chesapeake High School Field Hockey program as she begins her 9th season. Coach Sara is a former CYLA Girl’s Lacrosse Commissioner, Lacrosse Head Coach, and Panthers Athletic Club Board member. In addition, she is a level 1 & 2 U.S. Field Hockey Certified, Indoor U.S. Field Hockey, Accredited NFHS Coach, U.S. Field Hockey member, National Field Hockey Coaches Association member, and Positive Coaching Alliance certified coach. Coach Sara is also seen in the high school volunteering and is found around the Pasadena community working with constituents to trouble shoot issues. She has an Associate degree in Business Management and just completed her Bachelor’s in Marketing.  She is an alum of Chesapeake High where she played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. Lastly, she has a very supportive team at home with her two children and very patient husband, Dan.

Biography:

Coach Kelly Shanahan became fully involved in coaching field hockey in 2005 when her daughter Erin was in 3rd grade.  Shanahan has coached at all levels from rec league to coaching in an international match against a visiting team from Uruguay.    Shanahan holds her Level 1 USA Field Hockey Coaching Certification and was a Liberty Mutual Responsible Coach of the Year recipient.  Shanahan takes great pride in being a penalty corner expert and has coached teams how to win on the penalty corners.  A coach of a 2013 National Indoor Tournament Championship U16 team and a Silver Medalist at Disney's Showcase Shanahan coaches for The Gaels Field Hockey Club, the #1 ranked Club in Maryland and #12 in the Country.  Shanahan works full time as a Regional Pharmacy Manager and her daughter Erin is a freshman at the University of Virginia.  Coach Shanahan will be assisting in between her job, coaching her rec team, club team and seeing her own daughter play.
