Conflict of Scheduling

As you may have heard, there will again be a scheduling conflict this season with the MPSSAA state championship and one of MD Swimming’s Club Championship meets.

Due to a “pool availability” issue, MD Swimming has recently announced that their championship weekend has moved to Feb 22 – 25, 2018.  This now conflicts with the MPSSAA state meet, just like last year.  This is very upsetting news for all of us.  We want to be very clear in stating this is not a result of an MPSSAA or AACO decision.  The creation of this conflict clearly falls on the shoulders of MD Swimming, who was previously informed of the state dates for the next 5 years after the issue occurred last year.  I want everyone to know that Clayton, myself, Kevin Kendro (MPSSAA swim committee head), and Andy Warner (Executive Director of the MPSSAA) are all on the same page about the very unfortunate situation this puts SAs in who live in both swim worlds.  Clayton and I have been in contact with MD Swimming and have requested to be included in their long-term planning meeting, scheduled for March.  As frustrating as this is, we also understand the stance of the MPSSAA.  We can’t have swimmers competing in MPSSAA regions who know they aren’t going to MPSSAA states.  That scenario prevents other swimmers from competing and is detrimental to the integrity of the tournament.

In AACPS, we will operate under the following guidelines:

  • All AACPS swimmers who swim at regions and qualify for states must swim at states.  In other words, club swimmers who elect to swim for their club the day of states are not eligible to swim in regions.  There are no exceptions to this statement.
    • A swimmer who swims at regions, qualifies for states, and then skips the states to swim in a club meet will have violated COMAR.  The MPSSAA considers this “Misconduct Detrimental to a Tournament.”  Please see page 35 in the MPSSAA book - .07C(11).  The penalties for such a violation are very serious and may include the team, coach, and or athlete being ineligible to participate in the same event he following year.
  • Due to the wide variety in swim programs throughout our county, individual high schools are to decide how to manage their swimmers for whom this conflict will exist.
  • As you work with your program, please keep participation opportunities in mind, especially if you are a school that typically has cuts for swimming.
